David Satter: New Letter to Sir John Bell on Chelsea Manning.
Dear Sir John,
I am writing to request an immediate decision by the Trustees in the matter of Chelsea Manning and to express my wholehearted support for the most recent letters to you from Michael Tselentis, Owen Hughes and Brian Firth.
The invitation to Manning should never have been proffered. This is not just an argument over affirmative action, the propriety of fundraising or the denigration of Rhodes but rather about the necessity of ethical behavior itself.
Burke pointed out that we are afraid to trade on each person's private stock of reason because the stock in each person is small. We would do better to draw on the capital of good judgement that comes from the Rhodes Scholarship's past. I hope we will do so in the matter of Manning without further delay.
Yours Faithfully,
David Satter
